In my "copious" free time, I work on projects of interest to me; recently, I've been working on wearable computing research (yes, like the Borg). This has proven a really great way to look inconceivably conspicuous in public. Beyond that, I live with my two cats, Lysistrata and Machina, occasionally play the violin (I started at age 6), and use power tools in ways that do not always result in injuries to myself in others in the course of various "puttering"-type projects.
What is that huge thing on the front page?
It's a collection of nearly all of the actions I take on the web, as they happen.
How do you do this?
This site is actually running on Google App Engine, and it updates every fifteen minutes with all the new things I've done in the meantime. The code is currently not open source only for reasons of ugliness, but I'll clean it up soon and post it on GitHub (not that it's particularly difficult; if you're having trouble doing something similar, ping me and I'll help you out).
Why are you doing this?
Well, a variety of reasons; partly as an experiment, partly to show people how many of the actions they take are exposed on the Internet, all the time, and partly because I thought it was really cool. A couple of posts on my blog about it are here: before I set it up, and after.
Aren't you worried people might see something they disagree with?
Not hugely. As I noted above, all this information is exposed on the web anyway; I've just collected it for your enjoyment, and my convenience. I expect that most people looking to talk to me perform the web culture's usual due diligence, and look through websites about me before contacting me anyway-- so they'd get it all in any case.
Aren't you worried that potential employers might not hire you?
Nope. Actually, employers have seemed to think it showed a unique understanding of the way the social web works. If you're someone who would have hired me but decided not to on this basis, however, please feel free to contact me; I'd love to speak to you.
This is stupid.
That's not a question.
Do you have a blog?
Yes, I do; it's at http://ussjoin.com/blog. I try to post on it relatively frequently (though I do not always succeed), so please go take a look. It's a mixture of technical and personal posts, but I hope to entertain a large swath of my audience.
Can I email you?
Absolutely. I have a contact page for just this sort of question.
You're a huge geek.
Also not a question, but I'll just go ahead and assent anyway.
Some rights reserved, but not all of them, as that's rude. Design courtesy of, well, me.
